The turning radius for trucks on and off the expressway is too narrow. 

 

IDOT is including wider sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian refuge islands in their bridge designs.  The probability of a pedestrian or bicyclist being injured or killed when hit by a car or truck is substantially greater than the probability for a vehicle occupant.  Bicycle crashes are under reported, especially when there are no injuries or property damage and just one person is involved.
